About us
What it is and how this project will contribute

Our mission
Our goal is to build a collective reference genome cohort (GoE Cohort) of European citizens, selected to mirror the genetic composition of the European population. This will generate a solid basis for the development of personalised medicine and health approaches in Europe.
Who we are?
The Genome of Europe project brings together 49 partners from 27 European countries. The project unites the expertise from a number of research institutes and universities, healthcare organizations, governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, private sector companies and ELSI specialists to establish a unique pan-European reference database comprising of 100,000 genomes representative of European citizens.
What we do?
Building on the European 1+ Million Genomes (1+MG) initiative, the Genome of Europe. project was initiated in response to the rapidly growing use of genetic data in research and clinical applications, and the lack of a whole genome sequence (WGS) reference dataset for Europe. The data collected can be used to advance genomic medicine, enabling more personalized and effective healthcare solutions
How does the project work
The Genome of Europe work is divided into 7 work packages (WP) covering the following topics:
- Coodination
- Samples and Logistics
- ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications)
- Data Infrastructure
- Data collection
- Use cases and Pilots
- Communications and dissemination

Alignment with EU strategy
The vision : The EU’s flagship ‘1+ Million Genomes’ (1+MG) initiative aims to enable secure access to genomics and the corresponding clinical data across Europe to support ground-breaking research and health policy making and incentivise personalised healthcare treatments with the potential to improve disease prevention.
The signatory countries in 1+MG decided to implement the initiative along a two-staged Roadmap (2018-2022 and 2023-2027) detailing their activities across four dimensions: governance, trust framework, infrastructure and data.
